Course Description

Relays are very sensitive equipment which requires proper calibration, coordination, and of course, maintenance. Improper calibration can lead to either nuisance trips or an unprotected system if they are set too low or too high. Lack of coordination can shut down an unnecessarily large portion of a system in the event of a fault by tripping the wrong relay. Maintenance will keep your relays operating and ensure a protected system.

This Certified Protective Relay Calibration course will be customized as per the client’s electrical system and will provide protection and control technicians with the skills to carry out calibration as well as maintain and test relays.

Course Objectives

Upon the successful completion of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of protection systems and their basic operation
  • Identify types of protection required for different applications
  • Discuss protection system design and protective relay description
  • Understand basic construction and operating principles of protection relay
  • Study fault calculations, types of protective relays and their application and operation
  • Describe protective relay degradation and failure modes and conduct mechanical inspections and checks
  • Carry out insulation resistance test, induction disk pickup (or dropout) test,  induction unit timing test, indicating contactor switch (seal-in ) pickup and dropout test
  • Study instantaneous unit pickup test and calibration, slope test, angle of maximum torque test, reach test and  offset test
  • Conduct induction unit control test, through fault test and  induction unit calibration
