Course Description

An overview of GIS, or Geographic Information System, is crucial because it provides a foundational understanding of this powerful technology that integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. This technology has revolutionized how we see and work with our world, impacting fields as diverse as urban planning, environmental management, business logistics, and disaster response. By understanding the core concepts and applications of GIS, we can make more informed decisions, solve complex problems, and gain valuable insights into the spatial aspects of our world.

Course Objectives

Upon the successful completion of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Define GIS and understand its core components (data, software, hardware)
  • Explain the fundamental concepts of geography and spatial data
  • Identify different types of spatial data (vector, raster, imagery)
  • Learn basic GIS operations such as data acquisition, data entry, data analysis, and map creation
  • Understand the applications of GIS in various fields
  • Utilize basic GIS software tools for data visualization and analysis
  • Develop simple maps and perform basic spatial queries
  • Evaluate the quality and accuracy of spatial data
  • Understand the ethical and societal implications of GIS

Who Should Attend?
