Course Description

This 3-day training program is designed to provide non-electrical engineers with a clear and practical understanding of basic electrical concepts, systems, and safety practices. The course covers fundamental electrical theory, electrical components, reading electrical drawings, and understanding power distribution in industrial and commercial environments. Participants will gain the confidence to communicate effectively with electrical teams, interpret electrical documentation, and understand electrical equipment operation and limitations.

Course Objectives

 Upon the successful completion of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Understand basic electrical terms such as voltage, current, resistance, and power.
  • Differentiate between AC and DC systems and their applications.
  • Interpret basic electrical diagrams, wiring schematics, and single-line diagrams.
  • Understand electrical protection devices and grounding systems.
  • Identify common electrical equipment and understand their basic operation.
  • Apply basic electrical safety principles in the workplace.

Welcome & Introduction

Pre-Test

Day 1 – Fundamentals of Electricity & Electrical Safety 

  • Introduction to electricity and electrical energy 
  •  Basic electrical quantities:

           Voltage, Current, Resistance

           Ohm’s Law and simple calculations

  • Power and energy concepts (Watts, kW, kWh)
  • AC vs DC fundamentals
  • Series and parallel circuits
  • Electrical hazards and workplace electrical safety
  • Introduction to lockout/tagout (LOTO)
  • Exercise: Basic circuit calculations and safety scenario discussion

Day 2 – Electrical Components, Equipment & Power Distribution Basics 

  • Electrical conductors and insulation types
  • Common electrical components: fuses, breakers, relays, contactors
  • Transformers and basic principles
  • Motors and starters (DOL, Star-Delta overview)
  • Generators and UPS fundamentals
  • Basics of power distribution systems
  • Switchgear, panels, and MCC overview
  • Earthing/grounding and bonding concepts
  • Exercise: Identify components from real panel diagrams/photos and basic troubleshooting logic

Day 3 – Electrical Drawings, Protection Systems & Practical Applications 

  • Understanding electrical symbols and standards
  • Reading wiring diagrams and control diagrams
  • Understanding single-line diagrams (SLD)
  • Protection systems: overload, short circuit, earth fault
  • Circuit breakers types and applications
  • Basic electrical testing tools: multimeter, clamp meter, insulation tester
  • Common electrical faults and how to recognize them
  • Practical industrial applications and case studies
  • Final review and Q&A
  • Exercise: Interpret sample SLD and perform simple load/power calculations

Assessment Methodology

All courses conducted by EdTech will begin with a Pre-evaluation and end with a Post-evaluation.
