Course Description

The Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) program is designed to develop the skills required to perform professional energy audits in industrial, commercial, and building facilities. The course covers energy management principles, auditing methodology, measurement and verification techniques, energy performance indicators, and identification of energy conservation opportunities (ECOs). Participants will learn how to evaluate HVAC systems, lighting, electrical loads, boilers, compressed air systems, and renewable integration options. The training is aligned with internationally recognized energy auditing standards and best practices to prepare participants for certified energy auditor pathways.

Course Objectives

Upon the successful completion of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Understand energy auditing concepts, standards, and best practices.
  • Conduct energy surveys, data collection, and energy baseline development.
  • Analyze utility bills and determine energy consumption patterns.
  • Evaluate major energy-consuming systems (HVAC, lighting, motors, boilers, compressed air).
  • Identify and calculate energy conservation opportunities (ECOs).
  • Apply measurement and verification (M&V) methods to validate savings.
  • Perform cost-benefit analysis, payback, and ROI calculations for energy projects.
  • Prepare professional energy audit reports and recommendations.

Day 1: Energy Audit Fundamentals & Standards

  • Introduction to energy management and energy auditing
  • Types of audits: walk-through, detailed audit, investment-grade audit
  • Energy audit standards and guidelines (ISO 50002, ASHRAE audit levels)
  • Understanding energy flow and energy balance in facilities
  • Utility bill analysis and tariff structures
  • Developing energy baselines and Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs)
  • Workshop: Utility bill analysis + baseline development exercise

Day 2: Electrical Systems, Lighting & Motor Efficiency

  • Electrical distribution overview and power quality basics
  • Demand, load profiling, and peak shaving strategies
  • Lighting audit: lux levels, lighting design efficiency, LED retrofits
  • Motors and drives: efficiency classes, VFD applications
  • Energy saving opportunities in pumps, fans, and motor-driven systems
  • Power factor correction and harmonics impact on efficiency
  • Workshop: Lighting retrofit calculation + motor energy saving estimation

Day 3: HVAC Systems & Building Energy Performance

  • HVAC energy consumption analysis
  • Chillers, cooling towers, AHUs, and ventilation efficiency
  • Heat transfer basics and building envelope performance
  • Air conditioning load calculations and control optimization
  • Building Management System (BMS) role in energy efficiency
  • Thermal comfort standards and energy trade-offs
  • Workshop: HVAC audit checklist + chiller efficiency performance evaluation

Day 4: Boilers, Steam Systems, Compressed Air & Process Energy

  • Boiler efficiency testing and heat loss calculations
  • Steam traps inspection and steam distribution losses
  • Waste heat recovery and economizers
  • Compressed air system audit: leak detection, pressure optimization, compressor efficiency
  • Process energy auditing and industrial energy efficiency measures
  • Cogeneration and energy recovery options
  • Workshop: Boiler efficiency calculation + compressed air leak loss estimation

Day 5: Measurement & Verification, Reporting & Capstone Audit

  • Measurement and Verification (M&V) principles (IPMVP overview)
  • Data logging tools and energy monitoring techniques
  • Cost-benefit analysis: payback, IRR, NPV
  • Developing an energy efficiency implementation plan
  • Preparing professional energy audit reports (executive summary + technical annex)

Assessment Methodology

All courses conducted by EdTech will begin with a Pre-evaluation and end with a Post-evaluation.
