Course Description

This 3-day technical course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of distribution transformer principles, operation, and maintenance practices. Participants will learn transformer construction, operating characteristics, testing procedures, and preventive maintenance strategies to ensure reliable transformer performance and extended service life. The course combines theoretical knowledge with practical maintenance techniques applicable to utility and industrial environments.

    Day 1 – Transformer Fundamentals

    • Introduction to transformers and their role in distribution systems
    • Transformer construction: core, windings, tank, and accessories
    • Electromagnetic induction and transformer principles
    • Transformer ratings, nameplate data, and standards
    • Transformer connections: delta, star, and vector groups
    • Transformer cooling systems and insulation 

    Day 2 – Testing & Inspection

    • Transformer testing overview and objectives
    • Insulation resistance and polarization index testing
    • Turns ratio and winding resistance testing
    • Oil sampling and dielectric strength testing
    • Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) interpretation
    • Visual inspection procedures and checklists 

    Day 3 – Maintenance & Fault Diagnosis

    • Preventive maintenance program development
    • Oil maintenance and filtration procedures
    • Bushing, tap changer, and accessory maintenance
    • Common transformer faults and failure modes
    • Fault diagnosis and troubleshooting approaches
    • Transformer overloading and thermal management

    Assessment Methodology
