Course Description

This 3-day technical course provides participants with comprehensive knowledge of hazardous area classification principles and the selection of certified electrical equipment for use in explosive atmospheres. Participants will learn classification methodologies, equipment selection criteria, certification standards, and installation requirements for safe operation in hazardous locations. The course covers both IEC and NEC classification systems applicable to oil and gas, chemical, and process industries.

  • Introduction to hazardous areas and explosive atmospheres
  • Flammable gases, vapors, liquids, and combustible dusts
  • IEC zone classification system (Zones 0, 1, 2 for gases; Zones 20, 21, 22 for dusts)
  • NEC division and class system (Class I, II, III; Division 1, 2)
  • Area classification methodology and risk assessment
  • Documentation and area classification drawings
  Day 2 – Equipment Protection Concepts & Certification

  • Equipment protection concepts: flameproof, increased safety, intrinsic safety, encapsulation
  • IEC equipment categories and protection levels (EPL)
  • Equipment certification standards (IECEx, ATEX, NEC)
  • Temperature classification and ignition prevention
  • Interpreting equipment nameplates and certification marks
  • Equipment selection criteria for different zone classifications
  Day 3 – Installation, Inspection & Maintenance

  • Installation requirements for hazardous area equipment
  • Cable glands, sealing, and enclosure integrity
  • Inspection and maintenance of hazardous area installations
  • Hot work permits and temporary equipment
  • Common mistakes and best practices
  • Competency requirements for working in hazardous areas

Assessment Methodology
