Course Description

This comprehensive training program covers the operational principles, maintenance procedures, and safety standards of electrical switchgear and distribution systems. Participants explore component identification, fault analysis, testing protocols, and modern grid technologies through structured modules. Attendees gain the practical competencies required to safely operate, troubleshoot, and maintain industrial power distribution equipment. The curriculum benefits electrical engineers, technicians, and facility maintenance professionals responsible for power reliability.

Course Objectives

  • Identify major components and configurations of electrical switchgear and distribution networks
  • Analyze electrical faults and protection relay operations within distribution systems
  • Apply industry safety standards and lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance
  • Execute routine testing and diagnostic procedures on transformers, breakers, and busbars
  • Develop systematic troubleshooting workflows for power distribution failures
  • Implement effective asset management and preventive maintenance schedules

Who Should Attend?

Electrical engineers, maintenance technicians, and facility operations personnel responsible for the safety, reliability, and maintenance of industrial switchgear and power distribution systems.

Course Agenda

  • Key electrical components including busbars, circuit breakers, and switches
  • Understanding single-line diagrams, schematics, and equipment ratings
  • Core safety standards, arc flash awareness, and regulatory compliance
Hands-on: Interpret a facility single-line diagram and identify critical switchgear components and protection boundaries.Day 2 — Protection Relays, Control Systems, and Coordination
  • Principles of electrical protection and system coordination
  • Operation and application of electromechanical and numerical protection relays
  • Current transformers and voltage transformers sizing and wiring
  • Trip circuits, auxiliary power supplies, and control interlocks
  • Setting coordination studies and selective tripping concepts
Hands-on: Configure and test basic overcurrent protection relay settings using simulation software or test kits.Day 3 — Circuit Breakers and Ancillary Equipment Operation
  • Construction and operating mechanisms of air, vacuum, and SF6 circuit breakers
  • Switchgear enclosure design, insulation mediums, and environmental controls
  • Disconnectors, load break switches, and earth switches operation
  • Battery systems, DC supply reliability, and auxiliary power distribution
  • Monitoring systems, SCADA integration, and digital substation trends
Hands-on: Inspect breaker mechanical operating mechanisms and analyze operation logs for anomalies.Day 4 — Testing, Diagnostics, and Preventive Maintenance
  • Routine diagnostic testing procedures for switchgear and circuit breakers
  • Insulation resistance testing, power factor testing, and contact resistance measurement
  • Thermal imaging and infrared thermography for detecting hot spots
  • Partial discharge detection and condition monitoring methodologies
  • Developing risk-based preventive and predictive maintenance programs
Hands-on: Analyze sample diagnostic test data and thermal images to diagnose developing equipment faults.Day 5 — Troubleshooting, Safety Procedures, and Action Planning
  • Systematic fault-finding methodologies for distribution network failures
  • Root cause analysis for breaker trips and equipment malfunctions
  • Safe switching procedures, permit-to-work systems, and electrical isolation
  • Open forum Q&A to address site-specific operational challenges
  • Course wrap-up and individual action planning for on-site implementation
Hands-on: Participate in a guided troubleshooting scenario to isolate and resolve a simulated switchgear failure.
